Bombay Cat Breed

Bombay Cat Breed

The Bombay was developed in the United States, where it was granted Championship status by the CFA in 1976. It was the result of crossing Black American Shorthairs with Burmese of the American type and has the Burmese char-act eristic of looking lighter than it is. Its solid body and what the CFA standard calls 'a sweet facial expression' combine with jet black gleaming fur and bright gold or vivid copper eyes to give this friendly, personable breed a look of its own. Fur must be black to the roots. Kittens may take some time to develop the full dark color but they become more sleek with age to reach what the British and American standards both liken to a 'shimmering patent leather'. The eyes too have special brilliance when set off by the sleek black coat. In Britain, the Bombay standard is as for the other Asian Group shorthaired cats, except for its restriction to a single color. Nose leather, eye rims and paw pads should all be solid black, with very dark brown paw pads also acceptable under the GCCF. In Britain the GCCF standard is as for the Barilla and other Asian types. In these it is as set out in the breed description to the left.
