Burmilla Cat Breed

The Burmilla is a British breed partway between the Burmese and the British Shorthair, which began with an accidental mating between a Lilac Burmese and chinchilla. It has the body and head type of the Burmese cat with any tendency towards either the Siamese or the combines of the British Shorthair being a fault. It’s a member of what is now called the Asian Group, the name used for all cats of Burmese type, but with non-Burmese coat color, pattern or length under GCCF standard. The coat, inherited from the Chinchilla, is tipped or shaded, both depths of tipping being equally acceptable, with the evenness of shading being more important than its depth. The cat is recognized in both standard and silver varieties through a considerable range of colors. There should be an 'M' mark on the forehead, lines running from the outer edges of the eyes and penciling on the cheeks, but shading on the body should be as free of tabby markings as possible, with denser color along the spine and down the tail, dispersing gradually to become as light as possible on the under parts. The tail should be marked with incomplete rings and have a dark tip, the paws slightly barred; light spotting is permitted on the belly. The eyes should be outlined like those of the Chinchilla, the visible skin matching the coat color.

Medium length and thickness with firm muscle, a straight back and a generous but not disproportionately broad chest; legs medium length, the hind legs slightly longer than the front, paws tending to an oval shape; tail medium to long, medium thick, tapering slightly to a rounded tip.

A short wedge with a distinct nose break apparent in profile, widths between the ears which are medium to large, round tipped and continue the angle of the upper part of the face to produce a butterfly-wing outline from the front.

Full, well apart and slightly oriental in set but neither almond nor round; color yellow through to chartreuse, except in silver-coated cats for which green is preferred.

Short, fine and close-lying, slight ear tufts acceptable.

Black, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, caramel, apricot, cream; black, blue, chocolate, lilac or caramel tortie; any of these colors with a Burmese color restriction and any of these in silver form.
