Exotic Shorthair Cat Breed

Before the American Shorthair standard of 1966 was established longhaired cats were sometimes used in the development of that breed, with the result that cats of an intermediate type were sometimes produced. After 1966 breeding was deliberately pursued to create this type with the physical conformation of the Persian cat but with short tangle-free fur that is much easier to groom. It is rather closer to the British Shorthair than the American Shorthair in appearance and before the British breed was given recognition as a breed in the USA these cats were sometimes registered as Exotics. This would not now be possible since the nose is broader and shorter than the British cat and the present standard asks for a definite break. Fur should be noticeably longer than that of the American Shorthair but any suggestion of a Persian-type ruff or of long fur on the tail would be considered faults. Colors accepted vary according to registration body but Exotics can be found inmost feline colors and patterns. Exotic Shorthairs tend to have the placid temperament of their Persian forbears.

Cobby, heavily-boned, of large or medium size, deep, broad chest, massive shoulders and rump, low on short thick legs with large round paws and a shortish tail.

Round and massive on a short, thick neck with full cheeks anta short, broad snub nose with a definite break, a full firmly rounded chin.

Large, round, level and far apart; of brilliant color to complement coat color.

Medium length, dense, plush, soft and full of life; the coot should stand out from the body due to a thick undercoat.

Most feline colors and patterns are acceptable, the CFA allowing cats with pointed markings including lilac and chocolate.
