German Rex Cat Breed

German Rex Cat Breed

Fur that crinkles and curls is given the name rex fur and all Rex cat breeds have crinkly fur, though it is not all of the same type. Cats with such coats have occurred at various times and places but they were usually treated as freaks and it was only after World War Two that their novelty attracted the interest of breeders. Three types have been developed as recognized breeds. The German Rex sterns from a cat discovered in Berlin in 1951; it has since been discovered that its coat, with the primary guard hairs missing and both secondary guard hairs and down hairs wavy and shorter than normal, is genetically the same as cats which occurred in Cornwall, England, in 1950, and in Oregon, USA, in 1959, but the cat itself differs in other ways. In FIFe associations the German Rex is treat-ed as a separate breed and has a different standard from the Cornish Rex, however, the German Rex is now very rarely seen. German Rex exported to America contributed to the development of the Cornish Rex, but Siamese were also used in the creation of that breed. The German cat is not so oriental looking and has a round head and round feet.

Medium in size and length, a strong chest, rounded in profile; legs medium long and fine with small rounded feet; medium long tail, tapering from a substantial bose to a rounded tip.

Round with good breadth between the ears, strong chin and well-developed cheeks, the nose with a slight indentation at the base and the eyes set a good distance from it; large ears, wide-based and with slightly rounded tips.

Medium size, well opened, color to harmonize with coat.

Very silky, short and velvety with a tendency to curl and lacking guard hairs.

All colors, including varieties with white, any amount of white permitted.
