Scottish Fold Cat Breed

Scottish Fold Cat Breed

The fold-down ears of the Scottish Fold were first noticed in 1961 on Susie, the kitten of a farm cat in Scotland which heads the pedigree of all the breed. Unfortunately, the genes which produce fold-down ears were also found to thicken the limbs and tail and these possible side effects decided the GCCF against allowing recognition in Britain. However, kittens exported to the United States proved sound and healthy and the CFA accepted them for registration in 1976 and the breed gained full Championship status. It has been recognized by the CA of Britain. The breed has been developed by crosses to British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs so their build is reflected in the cat, with a well-padded body and a rounded head. A brief stop is permitted but a definite nose break is considered a fault. A smaller, tightly folded ear is preferred to a loose fold and a large ear. Kittens have pricked ears at birth and the droop does not begin to show until they arcabout four weeks old. Scottish Folds are recognized in a wide range of colors. Eye colors should be appropriate to the dominant color in the coat. Since 1987 The International Cat Association ('FICA) has also recognized a Longhair Scottish Fold

Medium size, rounded and even from shoulder to pelvic girdle with no sign of thickening in legs or tail, and neat, well rounded toes. Long tapering tails are preferred.

Well rounded, with prominent cheeks, and blending into a short neck. A firm chin and jaw, the muzzle with well-rounded whisker pads. A short nose with a gentle curve and ears set in a cap-like fashion to expose a rounded cranium, folding forward and downward with their tips rounded.

Large, well-rounded and separated by a broad nose, wide open and with a sweet expression.

Soft, dense and plush, so thick it stands away from the body.

Any cat coat and pattern except for chocolate and lavender (lilac) and those with darker Siamese-type points.
