These are cats like Wong Mau, the female from which the Burmese stem, handsome of her kittens; they fall between the types of Burmese and Siamese and have been produced by crossbreeding Burmese and Siamese, although now true bred. Like the Burmese, these are surprisingly heavy cats for their appearance which is of medium foreign type.
These cats have a rich even body color, shading almost imperceptibly to a slightly lighter hue on the underpants, with darker points and mask which merge gently into the body color, instead of being sharply contrasted as they are in the Siamese. American Tonkin’s colors have their own names: natural mink, which is medium brown with dark brown points; champagne mink, buff-cream with medium brown points; blue mink, which is blue-grey with darker slate blue points; and platinum mink, pale silver grey with darker frost grey points. The GCCF recognizes an even wider range of color than for the Burmese.
A sociable cat with a coat that is easy to keep in good condition, the Tonkin’s isn’t perhaps as talkative as the Siamese, though usually showing a lively interest in what is going on.
