The fold-down ears of the Scottish Fold were first noticed in 1961 on Susie, the kitten of a farm cat in Scotland which heads the pedigree of all the breed. Unfortunately, the genes which produce fold-down ears were also found to thicken the limbs and tail and these possible side effects decided the GCCF against allowing recognition in Britain. However, kittens exported to the United States proved sound and healthy and the CFA accepted them for registration in 1976 and the breed gained full Championship status. It has been recognized by the CA of Britain. The breed has been developed by crosses to British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs so their build is reflected in the cat, with a well-padded body and a rounded head. A brief stop is permitted but a definite nose break is considered a fault.
